The series of two paintings consist of a woman portrayed in the most vulnerable role of being asleep and watched by the artist. The serene sleeper is endowed with raw and sallow skin, to emphasize on the naked truth. The surrounding background with its colour and darkness harmonizes with the youthful model. When you’re painting someone sleeping, there is a degree of verism, where one is intruding almost on someone’s very private moment. The close framing reinforces the impression of privacy. Seen from a high viewpoint, the artist and the viewer respect the silence, even in painting, where the female is sleeping, as a way of escaping reality for a moment.
